5 tips for looking after your hearing aids this summer

With summer just days away, we’re getting excited about spending time outdoors! But while you might love the warm weather, your hearing aids do not. Heat, sweat, sunscreen and water can cause serious damage to your hearing aids if you’re not careful.

Here are our top tips for looking after your hearing devices this summer:

1. Bring backup!

If you’re going away over the summer, make a checklist and tick off all your hearing aid accessories as you pack. Remember to be well prepared and pack any extra batteries or tubes!

2. Be wary of sunlight and heat

Heat can cause damage to your hearing aids. Batteries in particular are especially sensitive to changes in temperature. Store your hearing aids indoors in a cool, dry place when you’re not wearing them, and keep out of contact with direct sunlight. Make sure not to leave them inside your car when parked outside!

3. Avoid contact with sunscreen

Be careful when applying sunscreen, as oils in sunscreen can affect hearing aids.  To avoid contact with sunscreen, take hearing aids out when putting sunscreen on ears and near the face. Wash your hands before handling hearing aids again.

4. Keep them dry

You are probably already well aware that moisture is one of your hearing aid’s worst enemies. So before you jump into the water to cool off, remember to take them out! If you happen to be exercising on a particularly hot day, avoid letting your hearing aids become exposed to excessive sweat.

5. Fight bacteria

The humidity of the summer months provides the perfect environment for bacteria to flourish in your hearing aids. Keep a small cloth with you at all times and give your hearing aids regular wipe downs when the weather gets humid.
